The concert will include the following works: In Memoriam…Esteban Gomez by Robert Ashley, Beaten Paths by Milton Babbitt, Letters from the Earth by Sarah Bassingthwaighte (World Premiere), Transition by Nat Evans (World Premiere), Music for Magnets by Paul Kikuchi (World Premiere), Canon #5 by Larry Polansky, I Riti: Ritual March by Giacinto Scelsi, and Bicoastal by Roger Zahab. The Seattle Percussion Collective will present three world premieres by Seattle based composers on a program that also includes three masterworks from Robert Ashley, Milton Babbitt, and Giacinto Scelsi The three featured new works for percussion ensemble are by Sarah Bassingthwaighte, Nat Evans, and SPC’s own Paul Kikuchi. Letters from the Earth by Ms. Bassingthwaighte is a percussion trio that takes the listener on a journey from the cacophonous world of industrial society through a dreamscape to the natural world that exists just outside the boundaries of our urban existence. Transition by Mr. Evans is also a percussion trio with an instrumentation of drums, vibraphone, orchestra bells and maracas. The resulting score is a flight of rhythmic and melodic shifts leading to a dramatic, boisterous climax, followed by a touching epilogue to close the piece. Finally, Mr. Kikuchi’s Music for Magnets draws inspiration from environmental rhythmic phenomenon such as rain sounds and old radiators as well as drumming traditions of Cuba and Tahiti. The piece explores the shifting gravity and balance inherent in poly-rhythm: man-made and otherwise. The Seattle Percussion Collective will pay tribute to Milton Babbitt with a performance of his seminal marimba solo Beaten Path. Mr. Babbitt recently passed away and his influence is felt throughout the repertoire of the Seattle Percussion Collective through works by him, his former students and friends. I Riti: Ritual March by Giacinto Scelsi is quite literally a march. It’s an emotionally somber piece and it features a combination of congas, bongos, bass drum, military drum cymbals, gongs and even woodblock. Scelsi’s ear for incredibly inventive sound combinations is evident in this wonderful work from 1963. Robert Ashley’s In Memoriam…Esteban Gomez is also from 1963, but there the similarity ends. In Memoriam is a graphic score realized by four musicians that memorializes the man credited with deserting Magellan, and mapping the eastern shore of North America. Rounding out the program are two pieces by American composers Roger Zahab and Larry Polansky. Canon #5 is quite literally a canon for four percussionists playing drums, wood sounds, glass and metal sounds. Roger Zahab’s Bicoastal is a lovely duo for vibraphone and marimba, rhythmically intricate and tuneful.
